BODYSTORM offers private and group classes on and off the ground in the Bay Area

Bodystorming: physical thinking experiments that metabolize complex questions from the bottom up. Integrating somatic awareness and improvisational movement, bodystorming pedagogy dissolves ambient boundaries between body and environment, rewiring pathways and sharpening tools of imagination. Translating safety practices from working at height to community harm reduction, BODYSTORM creates safer spaces* for communities to build capacity for connection, pleasure, and strength through embodied creative process. We gather in the eye of the storm, cultivating fugitive skills, deviant coalitions, and imaginative futures.

*We use the term "safer spaces" to recognize that we are never completely safe and we all enter a space with different experiences of safety.

Past Workshops

Murmurations: A queer-led movement and harmony-singing workshop

In this two-hour workshop, we will explore movement and song as an emergent practice in which our individual bodies and voices co-create complex, dynamic and cohesive collective relationship.

What if moving and singing together could be a rehearsal for the world we’re dreaming of?

Through guided somatic movement explorations,

B Dean will guide us in a practice softening into resonance, moving with the breath, and tuning/attuning to ourselves and each other. We will open pathways for collective listening and embodied connection.

elias wolf will guide us into the songs already pulsing in us and around us. Through improvised vocal play, we’ll build layers of rhythms and harmonies that support a deepening of interdependence and interconnection. No need to "know what you're doing." Just your voice, your willingness to listen, and the wisdom of the group.

No dance or group singing experience necessary, open to anybody with a body.

Trust Fall

In this vertical dance workshop, we will explore ways to build trust in ourselves, our bodies, and each other so that we may fall, with soft, intuitive skill, into the unknown. We will sharpen our senses and reflexes in the vertical plane and then ramp up into fluid and dynamic dance and playful improvisational scores. This workshop is designed for all bodies: day one is geared towards improvers, and day two is geared towards skilled and advanced vertical dancers. Prior movement experience is recommended and a willingness to play and fail is encouraged.

Let’s get together

A workshop commissioned by Circo Zero's “figure it out (a temporary commune),” a community performing artist residency at Space 124 in SF made freely available to a diverse community of experimental artists who need space to improvise, experiment, fail, and thrive. Featuring experimental performance research generating dance and aerial workshops, public conversations, queered gatherings, and performances. For six weeks, Circo Zero transformed Space 124 into an adult playground of aerial apparati amidst unevenly padded cardboard floors.

Inspired by Fred Moten:

"Let's get together to see how we can figure it out. Let's get together to see how we can work it out. Let's get together to see how we can get out of this. And we're interested in the moment at which this kind of weird inkling of transformation might begin to occur in which you realize that what we've been trying to figure out how to get to is how we are when we get together to try to figure it out."

“Let’s get together” was an all-levels workshop that explored aerial and ground-based movement via playful scores cultivating fierce softness and collective strength, asking: How do we work together to adapt to a dynamic environment?

TRANSMARSH Open Studios

During our initial creative process for Transmarsh in 2024, we opened the doors for individuals from the trans community to come get free private introductory lessons to vertical dance technique and safety systems at BANDALOOP Studios.

You’re My Queero

We are training to be our own heroes in times that are meant to destroy us. This offering involves guided improvisation, using somatic scores that nourish our soft parts and cultivate our expansive superpowers. We will use strength and endurance training to sharpen our edges, and phrase work as a practice of collective flocking. There will also be a designated space to rest, recuperate or observe throughout. This space is open to all and can be approached with as much ease or rigor as is right for you. I’m still recovering from top surgery, so I’ll be figuring things out alongside you as we co-create together. I’m excited to have DJ BluMoon (aka B Dukes) weaving the soundscape with us. Afterwards we’ll walk outside, hopefully feeling a little more connected and ready to show up for our tender world in a time of gen0cide.

Whet

/(h)wet/

verb

sharpen the blade of (a tool or weapon)
“she took out her dagger and began to whet its blade in even, rhythmic strokes.”

a thing that stimulates appetite or desire.
“he swallowed his two dozen oysters to whet his appetite.”

Our physical and social bodies are adapting to a new grammar to weather the many apocalypses we are facing. How do we find pleasure and cultivate our strength so we can hold each other through catastrophe? “whet” is a physical thinking lab to sharpen our edges and increase our capacity for connection. We will start and end in a circle, move through across-the-floor repetitions, improvisational scores, partner and group exercises, and bite-sized phrase work. The vibe is one part self-defense class, two parts “contemporary” dance experiments, and mostly just a place to come be in our bodies together. Come as you are. Bring a water bottle and clothes to move and sweat in.
